The Problem
Nearly all
cars with climate-control have
2 fans and each fan has 2 speeds, slow and fast. When the air con is ON,
the fans are meant to turn at a consistent low speed and if the engine
gets hot they will run at the higher speed, but what is happening is
that the low speed resistor within the fans is burning out (because of
bad design) so the fans will only pulse to high speed which is not
adequate for cooling the engine in warm weather (and noisy). Another
consequence is that the high speed fuse also blows and you are left with
no fans and overheat your engine!
The Diagnoses
1) Turn
engine on |
2) Then turn aircon on but
make sure 'ECON' is off |
3) Check that the fans are
running constantly (for around 2-3 min) |
4) If the fans do nothing,
then run very fast then stop for 1-3min; you've got a faulty
fan... welcome! |
The Solution
1) You can replace the fan under the warrantee but you'll have
a hell of a time trying to convince VW that the fan is faulty
(they have a tendency to deny it till cornered). Even if it is
replace, the replacement parts are no better and still use the
same flimsy resistor so there's a high chance you'll need another
replacement soon. |
2) In my
opinion this option is the better one to take. There's a DIY-fix
in which you replace the flimsy resistors with more durable ones.
I have not yet done this myself and so don't have any pics of my
own but there's a great step-by-step process done by BigAl
